Board Chair-Elect 

Herbert C. Buchanan, Jr.

Mr. Buchanan most recently served as president of Methodist and University Hospitals, the academic medical centers for Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was responsible for determining the strategic vision and priorities of the hospitals in alignment with the IU Health system business strategy. He led initiatives that included: planning for the Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the future; consolidations of medical staffs, leadership teams, staff and services into one AMC; significant improvements in quality and safety, team and physician engagement, and financial performance.


Prior to serving at Indiana University Health, Mr. Buchanan, a dynamic and effective leader, was the chief executive officer at Howard University Hospital, an academic medical center in Washington, DC, and chief operating officer for University of Maryland Medical Center, an academic medical center and internationally recognized shock trauma center, in Baltimore, Maryland. He also served in the role of vice president of Operations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL; and as vice president of Operations & Process Improvement for the Huntsville Hospital System in Huntsville, Alabama.


Mr. Buchanan has committed his professional career to the transformation of health care, contributing in academic medical centers and systems, community hospitals, the American Hospital Association, and various health care organizations. He enjoys investing in and developing young people and has served as faculty in graduate and undergraduate health care administration programs. He has also participated in a broad array of community services at the board and volunteer levels.


Mr. Buchanan is married to Dr. Michelle Carter, an emergency medicine physician who is the executive director of the University Health Center at Howard University, and who has two sons, Rodney and Ryan. He also has four adult children and a son-in-law. He enjoys sports and exercise and volunteering at his church. A native of Washington, DC, he has an MBA from the Northwestern University JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management, as well as graduate and undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), respectively.
